At a distance of three micrometres (3 microns), this novel microscope takes advantage of the fact that carbon atoms in graphite are located at periodic positions in space. If electrons are placed in the material, they will form an electron gas as they react with carbon atoms in graphite. A team led by Professor Jean-Christophe Amara of the French Atomic Energy Commission in Saclay, southeast of Paris, has discovered that graphite holes are magnetic. This is because, in such a hole, one of the positions is occupied by a non-magnetic atom, like a hydrogen atom, which has been stripped of its electron. At these atomic positions, a magnetic field can be applied, thus creating a magnetic potential in the hole. The microscope consists of a cylindrical magnet, in which a microchannel is etched. With
